What’s Missing?

Following on from guess the scary extension

An object recently went missing from our flat. None of the three of us (I have two flatmates) took it anywhere or have any knowledge of its whereabouts. It normally never leaves the room in which it is used. We agree it is about the most unlikely object in the entire flat for anyone to steal. Can you guess what it is?

  1. I can imagine someone pinching a TV remote – if they had the same TV and had lost theirs, for example…

  2. Yeah, count another vote for toilet brush. The combination of being unlikely to steal with never leaving the room it’s used in just screams “bathroom item”. My first thought was the plunger, but those have enough uses that it’s not *really* so unlikely to be stolen. (I mean, if somebody needs one, they generally need it *quick*, so rather than to go the store they might take a shortcut and nab one from a neighbor just to save *time*, nevermind the fiscal aspect of things.) Most other bathroom items are either small enough to mislay easily (e.g., soap dish) or physically attached to the plumbing. But the toilet brush is a little too large to accidentally knock into the trashcan and not notice, easy to walk away with, seldom needed really urgently, and just “icky” enough to make people go, “Who would steal *THAT*?”

  3. I gave too much away, didn’t I?

Yes, our loo brush has gone missing. Although the stand it lives/lived in remains. Absolutely incredible.

  4. That *is* incredible. Not only is it difficult to misplace and the last thing anyone would want to steal, it’s also the last thing you’d want turning up unexpectedly around the flat.

  5. As I read it, I thought loo brush too — just instinctively, without any of the elaborate reasoning that Jonadab went into. Why was that so “obvious”?

What is less obvious to me is just where said item is later going to turn up expectedly…

  7. sorry for the double post above — just correcting a mistake (spot the difference!), but evidently didn’t press the stop button quite quickly enough

  8. My son aged 2 at the time decided to brush my hair with a loo roll when I was in bed.
I didn’t half jumped out of bed when I opened my eyes.
